Verlag Julius Klinkhardt sees itself as a platform for discussing topics of pedagogical and educational relevance. The publisher is responsible for the quality of the publications. Therefore, most submitted manuscripts go through a peer review process.

Arriving at the house, in a first step they are subjected to an internal review. If not rejected, they are either subject to be reviewed by the editors of a series or sent to a commissioned group of external reviewers.

The external reviewers – specialists in the field – are usually affiliated to the publisher for many years. All requests are treated confidentially. Particular emphasis is put on the fact that there aren’t any personal or professional obligations to the authors – reviewers and authors must not cooperate in publishing.

Expert opinions by members of the same university are excluded. The reviewers remain anonymous to the author (single blindly), the contact person is the publisher or the chief editor. The consulted experts assess the adherence to scientific standards, relevance and adherence to the topic as well as its overall quality and scholarly relevance.

Back at the publishing house, the manuscript and the expert opinion are compared. Occasionally the publisher and the reviewer do not agree. In these cases, further anonymous experts (in individual cases, up to four expert opinions are obtained) are consulted until a valid conclusion is available.

Next, the author either receives an offer from the publisher – often combined with requests for revisions – or the manuscript is rejected.
